"Supporting total Hospice care for local families"

Florrie's Children's Team

Supporting children and their families with life-limiting illness

Who we are

The aim of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) is to provide comprehensive care and support through in-patient and at-home services to local families affected by life-limiting illness.

Hospice care is all about the person being more than a patient and finding ways to improve their quality of life through symptom control, pain relief, emotional and spiritual support. It is also being able to offer choice wherever possible - sometimes being cared for at the end of life in our In-patient Unit or at home by the Nightingale 24/7 team.

Families and close friends are also involved as they are often central to the well-being of those in our care.

Each year the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has pledged to provide over £650,000 towards the costs of the Hospice and its services, which covers Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire.

About our Florrie's Children's Team

Our Florrie's Children's service is a specialist team of nurses and carers providing vital home-based care to sick children from birth to 19 years of age, in the familiarity of their own home.

Families are given the opportunity to take time out from caring for their sick child, often around the clock. Florrie's nurses and carers are able to take on the care of the child in the home, while quality time is spent as a family, particularly with other siblings. This respite care brings some normality back into family life for a short while, providing direct and indirect support of the sick child and of the whole family.

The team supports families across Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and parts of Oxfordshire.

Your donations completely fund this service

Angie Pestka, Florrie's Team Lead says: "Having a sick child means families are providing 24-hour care so it's vital for parents, in particular the main carer, to have some time off to recharge batteries and be a wife and parent to other siblings within the family. Florrie's nurses help families achieve this goal, offering specialist home-based care and support to the sick child often 'round the clock' and tailored to their individual needs."

"I feel privileged that families entrust us with their most precious possession - their children."

What your donation means

• The Florrie's Children's Team is fully funded by Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) at a cost of over £100,000 each year

• Every home visit to a sick child costs FNHC around £120

• A £5 donation can help pay for a patient's arts and crafts activity box for home visits

• A regular donation of £10 a month can make a huge difference

What Florrie's care means to parents

"My son is very complex and suffers from Quadraplegic Hypotonia, severe learning disabilities, is non-verbal, has epilepsy and is a wheelchair user. The team came into our lives when he was just five years old - a particularly stressful time for us as a family. Having Florrie's care and support in our home means that we can plan, whereas any care or activity planned out of the home is always going to be dependent on how my son is that day.

"It's always reassuring to know Florrie's is only a phone call away. If we need help they can visit in the evening, at weekends, during the school holidays, to fit in with the care we need as and when we need it. They are also; apart from us; the people who know and understand my son's seizures more than any other professional or family member."

What parents say

"We only have praise for the Florrie's Children's Team nurses as they make such a huge difference - we would simply not be able to manage without them."

"Our nurse is fantastic and is the only way we get worry and stress-free time away. With Florrie's support, it enable us to focus on our 'well' children that have missed out on a lot. We wouldn't cope so well with the anxiety of having a child with a life-limiting illness if we didn't have this help."

"This is just such a wonderful service. My child has confidence in the team to give the care that Mum and Dad would normally give."
