Patients receiving specialist palliative care will have advanced disease for which curative treatment is no longer an option. The emphasis of treatment is on quality of life and enabling patients to maximise the time they have left.
The patients’ families and close friends are a very important part of the holistic care offered. Needs may vary at certain times during the illness – there may be a greater need for help and support at the time of diagnosis or if there’s a relapse or recurrence of the disease or at the end of life.
The specialist expertise of the Hospice staff includes:
- Knowledge and skills in resolving uncontrolled or complicated symptoms
- Managing complex nursing or therapy needs
- Facilitating complex psychological, emotional, social or family issues
- Supporting the patients and families with difficult decision-making in future end of life care provision.
